Clause 14 of the NZSSRA Constitution
- The Association shall maintain a register containing a complete description of colours approved for each member school.
- No school may compete at any Association regatta unless, upon written application to the Executive Officer of the Association accompanied by a sketch or photograph and verbal description, the colours have been approved by the Executive Officer and recorded in the register.
- No colours shall be approved unless they are unique to the school (or a boys/girls school pairing) and distinctive from other approved colours. Where practicable the Executive Officer shall not approve colours which are similar to club colours approved by the NZRA.

Rule 10 of the NZSSRA Rules for Racing (emphasis added)
- Every rower (coxswains excluded) must wear the official uniform of the school that they are representing. Any school not wearing approved Rowing Uniforms may be disqualified.
