Invitation for Patronage
The New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Championships
The 2007 Maadi Cup Regatta
March 26 to April 1 [Finals Rowed Friday Mar 30 & Sat 31]
The Maadi Cup was presented to the Maadi Camp Rowing Club in Egypt during World War Two, as a token of friendship between members of the Cairo River Club and Kiwi servicemen during World War Two. It was gifted to New Zealand Amature Rowing in 1944, for inter-school eight oared competition, and it was first raced for in 1947.
The Cup has grown in mana and prestige to become synonymous with excellence in New Zealand's young rowers. The 2007 championship regatta, known to all in the sport as "Maadi", will be rowed on the Lake Karapiro International course, on the Waikato River, near Cambridge.
Over the years Maadi has grown in significance to the point where more then 2000 rowers, from over 100 colleges, will compete in 42 events at the 2007 regatta. These young rowers are the elite youth of New Zealand. They are high achievers, not only in sport, but also scholastically, because they know about dedication and commitment, and are all huge contributors to one of sport's ultimate team disciplines.
Without doubt, some of the rowers from the 2007 Maadi, will row for New Zealand at the 2010 FISA World Rowing Championships; also to be held on Lake Karapiro.
The New Zealand Junior Men's Eight are the current World Junior Champions, and the New Zealand Junior Women's Quadruple Scull, are the current World Junior Championship silver medallists. All of these rowers have risen to the top, via Maadi regattas.
We offer you the unique opportunity to join the regatta as a Race Patron.
