UPDATES SATURDAYFinals are underway (again) FRIDAYIt's a warm morning here today and the semi-finals are underway. The live webcast kicks in today: http://www.r2.co.nz/20100326/ NZ Elites Rebecca Scown and Juliet Hague are at Maadi, walking the bank and mingling with competitors and spectators. We almost had our first gold medalists of the day, St Bede's College in the Boys Under-16 Double Sculls, but the race was red flagged. The course has also become too rough for the subsequent races for now. Racing will start on Saturday at 8:00AM with the re-row of the A final of Event 1, Boys Under-16 Double Sculls (race 330) THURSDAYThere's a little wind but not coming from the direction that's plagued racing so far. Instead we have some brilliantly close racing this morning.
Racing has resumed again at last. Starts are at 1000m. The eights (races 232 & 233) are heading down before the singles (races 230 & 231) before resuming the day sheet order. The first four races have been completed and more crews are heading down for their start. Races are being churned out as fast as possible and closer than originally programmed. We'll race through to 7:30PM and could possibly complete all the repechages. Repechage races have been completed. They were mostly 1000m starts but the Boys and Girls Under-18 Eights free-started from 2000m. WEDNESDAYThere was some pretty rough weather last night but it's eminently rowable this morning and the first race got away on time at 7:55AM. Day one's programme has finally been completed and we're getting through the remainder of the heats in good time. HEATS COMPLETE. Heats are now finally complete. The South Island crews dominated the Girls Eights heats and the Boys Eights heats were dominated by North Island crews. Repechage daysheets for today are now available (and online). Repechages for events 1 to 26 (U18G2X) are scheduled for today. Racing mostly at 5 minute intervals (with some 10 minute interval for crew/plant clashes) until the last race goes at 18:35PM. The weather has turned, the flags are flying again and white caps are rolling down the course. However, it came in quickly and might still die down just as quickly. Race 200, repechage 2 of the Boys under-18 pair was the last one to go down the course. Maadi on TV. There'll be an article about Maadi rivalries on TV One's Close Up programme this evening (Wednesday) at 7:00PM. TUESDAYThe day has dawn bright clear and calm. Racing will begin on time at 8:00am. There appears to be a dusting of new snow on the hills above Twizel but a chilly morning could give way to a hot day. The biggest uncertainty again today will be the wind. Never a dull moment... race 1 of day two saw a gear failure i nthe start zone and after it was restarted and run there has been a protest at the finish.
MONDAYThe weather forecast seems to be spot on. The rain has arrived at the lake (light for now but likely to get heavier this morning) but the wind departed at the same time so racing is on schedule on day one. Racing on hold 10:15am-11:00am. After the rain passed through the wind picked up to the extent the regatta was put on hold. Racing re-started at 11:00am. Race 27 (heat 4 U15B4X+), which was called off part way through due to the wind, has been rescheuled to race between races 73 & 74.
Problems with wind in the start area have led to further delays accumulating. Racing is currently a little over an hour and three quarters behind schedule. Racing extended. To try and recover some of the race time lost to weather today racing will be extended with the last race now starting at 7:00PM. Racing finished. Th re-row of race 27 will be first thing (8:00am) on Tuesday followed by race 72 onwards through to the end of heats. Repechages will now start on Wednesday.
