2025 Maadi Regatta NoticesNewsletter - Sitemap -
In 2013 the Schools Committee approved a new progression system for use at Maadi (Option 1). It is one that brings the regatta closer to a full FISA progression and addressed a small number of short-comings in the Option 1 progression.
By 2021 entry levels had again climbed to a point where there was insufficent time to use the Option 7 progression without doing something like running all A/B Finals on Saturday. Instead the Schools Committee approved the use of the old Option 1 progression. In 2022 COVID-19 arangements meant a reduced Maadi was held. But by 2023 entry numbers were expected to be back to 2021 levels. So the Schools Committee approved a variation to Option 1 that would allow it to be used without the prior shortcomings. This saw Quarter-finals replacing Repechages when there are 41 or more entries in an event.
The traditional progression system used for NZSSRA regattas used to see all crews progress from the heats to either a repechage, semi-final or final. In 2005 at a Special Committee Meeting held to address concerns about the growing duration of NZSSRA regattas the Executive agreed to approve two further progression systems, which could be used to reduce the duration of a regatta.
In 2009 faced with a limit of one-crew-per-school-per-event at the North Island Secondary School Championships the Executive Committee agreed to two new progressions systems. Each can only be used in conjunction with a seeded regatta. These were subsequently modified for the 2010 regatta to create a single progression system that also incorporates semi-finals for the largest events (Option 6).
The fifth progression system has been in use at South Island Secondary School Championships for a number of years but only became available for publication in 2010. In 2012 it was tweaked for 9 entrants so both heats had an incentive to race one heat did not have a "row through" advantage over the other.
Eventually NISSC entries grew too large for semi-finals to continue to be scheduled. That was when the eighth progression system was approved.
Over-subscribed events
Entry limits are supposed to be in place to constrain entries so the progression system can be applied to each event. But sometimes the limits are ineffective and an event ends up over-subscribed.
In such cases an alternative progression system might be used, different qualifying processes used (e.g. time trials), or steps taken to reduce entries to a level the progression system can cater for. A regatta's Conditions should specify how over-subscribed events are managed.
For the 2019 Maadi the Schools Committee approved an emergency extension of the Option 7 progression table. This was to cope with a couple of events that, in spite of entry limits, were over-subscribed and received 65-72 entries.

C and D Finals will be held at the same stage of the regatta as Semi-finals. B Finals will be held directly before the associated A Final. |
Emergency progression For over-subscribed events in option 7 in 2019
Entrants | Heats | Heat progression | Reps | Reps progression | QF | SF | Finals |
65-72 | 9 | 1-3 > QF, last ELIM rest > Reps | 5 | 1 > QF, 2 > FE, 3 > FF, 4 > FG | {QF} | {SF} | A, B, C, D, E, F, G |
Note: due the place-based progression used for Maadi regattas Finals E, F, and G are 5-boat finals, which is one reason why this is only an emergency extension to the existing progression. |
