2024 Aon North Island Secondary Schools Champs regatta Lake Karāpiro, 10-12 March 2023

What: North Island schools competing for supremacy in 52 events, and preparing to challenge the South Islanders at Maadi.

The North Island Championships are finished for another year.

Going into the regatta the weather forecasts were marginal at best, with a very real possibility the progressions would need to be truncated (semi-finals removed) or some events might even have to have medals awarded based on heats results. However, over the course of the regatta the forecasts improved. And where the weather didn't match the forecast it was thankfully due to there being less wind than forecast not more. Finals day on Sunday was a very wet day but the entire regatta programme and the planned progressions were able to be completed.

The Derbyshire Shield for Champion School of the regatta was very tight again this year. And, yet again, there was two-way tie. This time between Whanganui High School and Hamilton Boys High School. Whanganui High led for much of the regatta; only to see Hamilton Boys create a tie when they won the last race of the day.

This year in the 12 pennant events (those with unrestricted entry i.e. U18, excl novice) honours were shared between 7 different schools. HAMB took home the most, managing a clean sweep (pardon the pun) of the boys pair, four, and eight. WKDS picked up the girls four and eight. MTAL rounded out eth sweep oar events with the girls pair. In the sculling WLGC took home the single and quad (a change from last year where their pennant events were sweep oar). MACL took home the single and double. The remaing two sculling events went to WNHS (girls double) and STPA (boys quad).

Waikato Diocesan School again won the Girls Under-18 Eights and Hamilton Boys High School again won the Boys Under-18 Eights.

Schools will now be looking forward to travelling to Ruatnaiwha to compete against their South Island counterparts at the 2024 Aon Maadi Regatta.

Penalties, exclusions & relegations 1-3 March 2024

A crew was Relegated in its A Final from 3rd place to last place. The Relegation happened after the crew's deadweight was check-weighed and found to be less than the recorded weight.
A crew was Excluded from its heat after receiving two Yellow Cards: one for a traffic violation (crossing the green buoy line), one for being late to the start.
A crew was Excluded from its heat after repeatedly crossing into a neighboring lane and affecting the race of that lane's crew.

2024 Stats

At close of entries there are 1884 students entered the regatta. They are representing 80 schools and are entered in 4672 seats in 1262 crews.

Entry Fees

Entry fees (exclusive of GST) for the regatta are unchanged from last year. They were set by members at the 2023 SGM: 1X $22, 2X/2- $24, 4X+/4+ $31, 8X+/8+ $38, amenity $26 per student.

Entry limits

There are new entry limits for 2024. The following entry limits apply:

Maximum of 3 events per rower.
Maximum of 2 crews per school in each event; except in eights and octuples, which have had a limit of 4.

Number of events per student

School age rowers should only be racing 2 events at a Championships regatta. A few rowers could be considered for 3 events; none should be doing more.

NZSSSC School Team Eligibility criteria

Schools are limited to 3 "new" students in an eight and 1 "new" student in other boats ("new" students are those who've swapped schools or come from overseas and looks back over the past 2 years). There is now also a limit of 2 students with an NZSSSC-issued PCRE per crew (1 in singles!).

SISSC

While North Island schools are competing on Lake Karāpiro for recognition as the best the North Island has to offer their South Island counterparts will be do the same thing up at the 2024 Meridian South Island Champs on Lake Ruataniwha. Keep a watch on both regattas for indicators of who may claim the top spot at Maadi!

2023 Stats

There were 1825 students from 79 schools entered in 4649 seats in 1276 crews. 287 races were held to complete the regatta and find the winners of all 52 events.
