The South Island Championships are finished for another year. Having a Friday start meant there were no scheduling pressures. That proved its worth when fog delayed racing by 3 hours on Saturday morning. There was ample time between heats and finals to recover and get back on schedule when finals began.
Christchurch Boys High School won the Points Bell for Champion School of the regatta for the third consecutive year. But this year Timaru Boys High school pipped Rangi Ruru Girls School to second place.
As usual the standard of competition was very high. The 12 pennant events (those with unrestricted entry i.e. U18, excl novice) were shared between 7 different schools. CBHS nearly made a clean sweep of the boys' events - but for 1 event won by CHCO. The girls events were far more spread out more. SLDG managed to win 2 events; RRGS, CGHS, CRAI, and STMG won 1 each.
Christs College won the Boys Under-18 Eights and St Margarets College again won the Girls Under-18 Eights.
Next up is a chance for schools to compete against their North Island counterparts at the 2020 Aon Maadi Cup.
Live results were available during the regatta. Results can be found on the rowIT website: rowit.nz/siss2020/results
