Welcome to the 2018/19 Season!

I hope you have enjoyed the spring weather recently along with some good water! We also hope your new rowers are enjoying their first rowing experiences and early season regattas.

SISS moves to a Friday Start

The Meridian South Island Secondary School Championships will this year begin on Friday 8th March. After increasing pressure on the time available to complete the regatta members agreed at the NZSSRA AGM to start the racing on the Friday afternoon in 2019. This would eliminate the need to hold heats and finals on the same day and having to race well into the Saturday evening, which had been a concern of many schools over the last few years.

Limits on entries at School Championship Regattas in 2019

The following limits have been proposed by hosts and approved by the Schools Committee for the 2019 school regattas and the following will be applied at each event:

Aon Maadi CupAon North Island Secondary School ChampsMeridian South Island Secondary School Champs
Doubles
1 crew per event per school
Singles
2 crews per event per school
All other events
4 crews per event per school
All boats
2 crews per event per school
Single, Double/Pair, Four/Quad
2 crews per event per school
Eights and Octuples
No Limit
Lightweight events - zero crews at all regattas

After the close of entries regatta control may call for supplementary entries but only where this will not require extra races to be completed, but schools should not rely on these extra entries. Should any of these supplementary entries mean rowers are entered above the recommended amount School Principals contacted directly to approve these extra entries.

The Schools Committee is asking all schools to consider their entries more carefully. A look at the 2018 Aon Maadi Cup shows that almost a quarter of all supplementary entries were subsequently scratched (46 of the 194) so they did not complete the regatta. We also found nearly a third of the over-entered students (students in 4 or more events) were also in supplementary entries. Should supplementary entries continue to be used in this manner the Schools Committee may need to reassess their future use.

Lightweight Not Sanctioned at School Regattas

At the 2018 AGM NZSSRA members requested that a letter be written to the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council (NZSSSC) asking them to reconsider their position on lightweight event sanctioning. The NZSSSC advised that the Board considered all aspects that informed its original decision and unanimously reaffirms its earlier decision not to sanction lightweight events at school regattas. Therefore, in 2019 lightweight events at school regattas (NISS, SISS and Maadi Cup) will not be raced as zero crew limits will be applied.

NEW Regatta Programme

A new school regatta programme was presented at the 2018 AGM. A sub-Committee was formed to review the full regatta programme and determine the new format. Feedback was sought from all members over the course of last year.

Most feedback indicated the schedule was reasonably well liked except for the placement of the U15 Octuples and that there was a desire for inclusion of Novice Quads (which had been requested for several years).

Below is the new school regatta programme for 2019.
Please note that the lightweight events are not sanctioned and hence are crossed out on the programme.
