The South Island Championships are finished for another year. Conditions were good and there was some excellent racing.
Christchurch Boys High School won the Points Bell for Champion School of the regatta. It was a convincing win over second-placed Rangi Ruru Girls School.
The standard of competition was very high and the 12 pennant events (those with unrestricted entry i.e. U18 non-novice, non-lightweight) were shared between 7 different schools. The boys pennant events were shared between just 2 schools. CBHS dominated sweep events and also won the quad. RONC won the 2 sculling events. The girls events far more spread out more. CRAI won 2 events. And NCOG, STMG, VILL, and RRGS won 1 each.
Christchurch Boys High School won the Boys Under-18 Eights and Rangi Ruru Girls School won the Girls Under-18 Eights.
The brand new exhibition Novice Quads were won by DUNS (girls) and CASH (boys).
Schools will now be looking forward to a chance to compete against their North Island counterparts at the 2018 Aon Maadi Cup.

2018 Stats
There were 1110 students from 49 schools entered in 3324 seats in 928 crews. 184 races were required to complete the regatta and find the winners of all 50 events.
Novice quads
Novice quadruple sculls events have been added as exhibition events 35E and 36E. They can be entered during supplementary entry.
Dogs
There have been many incidents over the years with dogs and clearly people have not adhered to the requirement of all dogs being on a leash. A recent incident at the South Island Championships has left SIR with no alternative but to ensure that the Ruataniwha complex is a dog free zone during regattas. Signs will be erected at the entrance to the complex.
Cycling
Under obligations and responsibilities associated with running large events SIR has decided that for the SISS and Maadi regattas there will be no cycling allowed through the spectator viewing area which will include from the entrance by the café through to the double gates near the 1500 metre mark.
Alcohol
Licence regulations prohibit evening gatherings involving liquor in marquees post regatta.
Fundraising
Sales of food, drink, souvenirs and raffles from tent sites and around the complex is prohibited. SIR is bound by Mackenzie District Council licence regulations and memorandums of agreements associated with regattas.
Tents/shelters
Tents and major shelters are not to be erected between the lakeside road and lake. These block views for many including the judges in the finishing tower.
Parking
Vehicles are not to be parked between the lakeside road and lake between the 1000 and 1500m to allow better viewing of races for all.
Warm clothing
Although rowing is a summer sport the weather does not always co-operate and the lake if fed from glaciers. It is essential everybody has warm clothing available and uses it. Officials do not want to see crews arriving at the start shivering when they should be dressed warmly and removing the extra layers pre-race.
NISSC
While South Island schools are competing on Lake Ruataniwha for recognition as the best the South Island has to offer their North Island counter-parts will do the same thing up at the 2018 Aon North Island Champs on Lake Karapiro. Keep a watch on both regattas for indicators of who may claim the top spot at Maadi!
Entry Fees
Entry fees (exclusive of GST) for the regatta were set by members at the 2017 AGM: 1X $16, 2X/2- $20, 4X+/4+ $30, 8X+/8+ $44, amenity $22 per student.
Entry limits
Lightweight events: 0 crews per school per event; events other than eights and octuples: 2 crews-per-school-per-event; eights and octuples: no limit.
Number of events per student
School age rowers should only be racing 2 events at a Championships regatta. A few rowers could be considered for 3 events; none should be doing more.
NZSSSC School Team Eligibility criteria
Schools are limited to 3 "new" students in an eight and 1 "new" student in other boats ("new" students are those who've swapped schools or come from overseas and looks back over the past 2 years). There is now also a limit of 2 students with an NZSSSC-issued PCRE per crew (1 in singles!).

1120 students from 47 schools entered in 3107 seats in 869 crews. 196 races were required to complete the regatta and find the winners of all 52 events.
