Welcome to new NZSSRA members: Hillmorton High School, Mount Hobson Academy, Opihi College, and St Catherine's College who are in their first year of rowing under NZSSRA. Welcome back to Hastings Boys' High School (2017), Campion College (2020), Carmel College (2020), and Nayland College (2020) who have rejoined NZSSRA after a short break. And warm welcome to you all to the 2024 Aon Maadi Regatta.

NZSSRA is excited to report for the first time in our history SISS, NISS and the Aon Maadi regattas have appointed women in the roles of Chief Umpires. In terms of regatta growth, we are delighted to see that our numbers for the Aon Maadi Regatta are back to pre-COVID times. Additionally, SISS is up 2% and NISS is up 8%. While the numbers are looking healthy, it also poses some challenges. To successfully run regattas, we rely on numerous volunteers, and we have been fortunate to have such a dedicated group. However, we are in constant need of support in this space, so please reach out to your communities to see if any individuals might be interested in volunteering in the future.

Due to changes in the new Incorporated Societies Act, existing societies will need to re-register with an updated constitution that is compliant. As you can imagine, this will be a significant amount of work. The first part will look at reviewing the rules of racing. Coincidently, the 2025 NZSSRA AGM is a rule change year, and we are hoping to synchronize our rules and the RNZ rules. As RNZ is also looking to review its rules we are looking forward to collaborating closely throughout this process to ensure that rules are consistent, practical, and reflect our needs. Mark will talk about the timeline for this mahi shortly. So, work pertaining to the rules of racing will need to happen throughout the winter to be ready for the 2025 AGM and the eventual review of our constitution. This process will look to review the NZSSRA Board and Schools Committee structure to make the decision-making process more efficient. Additionally, the 2026 AGM is a review of the programme of events. So, we will need to prepare for these changes over this winter break to provide time to gather your voice, draft changes and seek feedback on proposals. We need to think creatively and be open to new ways to sustain and progress our sport. Your voice will be important in this process and the Schools Committee will be eager to hear your ideas, so I urge you to answer the call when it comes after the Aon Maadi Regatta.

NZSSRA would like to acknowledge Mark Weatherall for the tremendous amount of work he does for the domestic rowing scene in New Zealand and his leadership on the Schools Committee. We thank Rowing New Zealand for giving us the backing we require to support rowing in the secondary school space. Finally, NZSSRA would also like to thank our regatta hosts, SIR, and wish all our competitors the very best for a week of competition, fairness, and fun.

    2. Setting of fees for the 2025 Championships

Proposed fees for the 2025 North Island Secondary School Championships and 2025 Maadi Regatta Fees

Karāpiro Rowing Incorporated (KRI) have sought to keep expenses and fee increases at a minimum for 2024/25 season however unfortunately like all New Zealand, KRI is also experiencing the pressures of the current financial climate.

A 5% increase on all expenses has been budgeted, however, Waipa Domain have had a 10% increase across the board for the use of all land, building and water bookings; they have increased the structure of their billing for use of the upper campground to match camping rates, rather than large area booking rates, and rowIT has tabled a 24% increase.

Unfortunately, due to the above we are unable to retain the fees for NISS and Maadi Regatta at current levels and would like to propose the following changes for this year's events:

      1. An increase of $3 for all boat class entry fees and $3 Amenity fee increase for NISS.
      2. An increase of $5 for all boat class entry fees and $5 Amenity fee Maadi.
      3. A 10% increase to tent site hireage for NISS and Maadi.

With these increases KRI are still anticipating a loss of $13700 for NISS and a loss of $48280 for Maadi.

Please refer to the below table for the proposed fee amounts and history.

      Questions:
Ian Bright raised why a fee is increasing but rubbish collection is up to schools and clubs and they need to provide volunteers?

Josh Wedlake from KRI replied - rubbish fee is controlled by the Waipa DC. The KRI Board have pushed back and are looking at some other options to reduce the costs.

  13. Remits
    1. One remit was received from Karāpiro Rowing Incorporated regarding suggested changes to Safety System however this remit requires further work and would require changes to the NZSSRA Constitution and rules of racing, it will be deferred to the 2025 AGM
  14. Other Matter/Business from the Floor
    1. John O'Connor - spoke to the meeting, outlining his proposal for "school year" based groupings rather than the current age group we have now. He also spoke to the meeting that we should look at reducing the distance for younger age groups to 1000m. There were a lot of discussions. Further comments come from the following:
      1. Allan Vester - echoed John's sentiments about reduced distances and would also like to see no Under 15's at the Maadi Regatta
      2. Twizel School raised concerns around how would this work for smaller schools that use different age groups to fill older events.
John's proposal can be looked at as part of the 2025 AGM as it is a Rule-change AGM
  15. Date of next AGM - TBC
