An an SGM on 24 February NZSSRA members agreed to amend the Constitution, Regulations, and Rules. The changes that were made were necessary for NZSSRA's new Year 14 policy to become enforceable at Maadi.
The Constitution (Article 1), Regulations (Regulation 7), and Rules (Rule 2) have been updated online.
The Year 14 policy does not affect student eligibility for this regatta. It only changes Year 14 student eligibility at Maadi. However, the new Regulation does affect the entry forms for this regatta. Each student's Year Level will have to be recorded in the declarations.
Schools should familiarise themselves with the new Year Level definition in the Constitution, to make sure they understand what Year Levels mean in the context of NZSSRA Championships.
There are new entry limits for 2025. The following entry limits will apply:
Schools must also be aware the compressed nature of this regatta means there should be no expectation any student who is entered in more than one event will have sufficient time available to compete in all of those events.
Note: as in recent years entry limits will not rise during supplementary entries, which are only limited late entries. They do not create new opportunities to enter.
The Schools Committee continues to make the following recommendation:
School age rowers should only be racing 2 events at a Championships regatta. A few rowers could be considered for 3 events; none should be doing more.
In reaching the recommendation advice was sought from physiologists, leading elite coaches and the NZ Secondary School Sports Council. The Schools Committee will continue to monitor the number of entries per student this season.
Since 2024 the regatta has had per-rower entry limits, but the above recommendation remain relevant.
The SSNZ School Team Eligibility criteria limits were last revised with effect 2018. An article about the SSNZ School Team Eligibility criteria is available to help members assess whether or not each of their students is considered new to their school. Schools are limited to 3 "new" students in an eight and 1 "new" student in other boats ("new" students are those who've swapped schools or come from overseas and looks back over the past 2 years). There is also a limit of 2 students with a SSNZ-issued PCRE per crew (1 in singles!).
NZSSRA's online regatta entry system will open for entries in February and entries will close a fortnight before the regatta. Member schools will be sent a notice and copy of the regatta Conditions when entries open.
Meanwhile the online regatta entry system is open for roster maintenance. Schools are strongly encouraged to log in for Roster Maintenance and tidy up their roster of students before starting entries. That is becuase doing this while making regatta entries considerably slows down the process. Please pay special attention to the "SSNZ critical details" tab of Roster Maintenance, which shows if any critical details are missing from students' profiles. In particular, new students are likely to need their SSNZ School Team Eligibility criteria set.
Passwords for online regatta entry are held by Member Schools' Sports Coordinators (schools should contact the Manager regarding misplaced passwords.)
Any non-financial members cannot enter NZSSRA Championships and should contact the Schools Committee urgently if they are hoping to enter NISSC.
Entry fees (exclusive of GST) for the regatta were set by members at the 2024 SGM: 1X $25, 2X/2- $27, 4X+/4+ $34, 8X+/8+ $41, amenity $29 per student.
Live results will be available for the regatta. Results will be able to be found on the rowIT website: rowit.nz/niss2025/results
Tent sites are ordered during the online entry process and are allocated by ballot after close of entries.
While North Island schools are competing on Lake Karāpiro for recognition as the best the North Island has to offer their South Island counterparts will be do the same thing up at the 2025 Meridian South Island Champs on Lake Ruataniwha. Keep a watch on both regattas for indicators of who may claim the top spot at Maadi!
There were 1895 students from 79 schools entered in 4893 seats in 1346 crews. 306 races were held to complete the regatta and find the winners of all 52 events.
This New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Association regatta is sanctioned by School Sport New Zealand.
