Maadi - Didymo A message from DOC

"There was a great response from everyone regarding the wash and a lot of interest shown in the didymo display. Congratulations once again for the tremendous effort from [South Island Rowing Inc] in the fight to stop the spread of didymo."

While every effort was made at the Maadi Cup to wash gear, there is always the possibility that some items may have been inadvertently missed. Please ensure that your boats, riggers, shoes, socks, oars etc are checked before being used again. If in doubt, please re-wash using a 5% detergent solution or leave to thoroughly dry out. Anything which is still damp and which may have missed the wash could still harbour live didymo cells. All equipment should be washed or dried when changing to another waterway. The ultimate responsibility for this rests with you!

Useful information about didymo can be found on the Bio-Security website: www.biosecurity.govt.nz.

Notices & Updates Ruataniwha, 31 March - 6 April 2008

  • Didymo / boat & gear washingupdated
Sadly, didymo has been confirmed established in Lake Ruataniwha. It is now more important than ever for schools to carefully wash all their on-water equipment. This includes any socks and footwear that goes in that Lake. Don't forget "Check, clean, dry". SIRI has well-established provisions for washing boats and Rangers will be on hand to oversee the process.
  • Activities around Twizel
Please see the notices page of the school rowing website for a host of activities that can be undertaken in around Twizel and the Mackenzie Basin. Perfect for schools with any spare time during the regatta!
