Wrap-upNISSC 2025
The North Island Championships are successfully compeleted for another year.
For the second year running, going into the regatta the weather forecasts were marginal at best, with a very real possibility the progressions would need to be truncated (semi-finals removed) or some events might even have to have medals awarded based on heats results. However, again, over the course of the regatta the forecasts improved. And where the weather didn't match the forecast it was thankfully due to there being less wind than forecast not more. Finals day on Sunday had a strong tail wind but the entire regatta programme and the planned progressions were able to be completed.
The Derbyshire Shield for Champion School of the regatta was very tight again this year. Although, unlike the past 2 years, the points did not end in a tie. This time Kings College came out victorious.
This year in the 12 pennant events (those with unrestricted entry i.e. U18, excl novice) honours were shared between 7 different schools. WKDS and WTLB each took home 3. WTLB managed a clean sweep (pun intended) of the boys pair, four, and eight. WKDS picked up the girls four and eight and the single. WTLG rounded out the girls sweep oar events with the girls pair. In the sculling STPC took home the girls double and quad, and the bous events were shared between MACL (single), WHAK (double), and SPLH (quad).
For the third year running Waikato Diocesan School won the Girls Under-18 Eights. However, Westlake Boys High School broke HAMB's streak and won the Boys Under-18 Eights.
Schools will now be looking forward to their South Island counterparts coming up to Karāpiro for the 2025 RNZ Maadi Regatta.
